One is supposed to evaluate art in the context of its time。 In which case this comes across as a caring and loving portrait of a Kenya that no longer exists。 Read from today’s standards it comes across as patronising， colonial， racist and arrogant。 I found her style flowing and would be mildly interested to try her fiction。 Only mildly though。

Yeah…I quit。 Like I said before， beautiful descriptions of Africa， uncomfortable descriptions of African people， and absolutely nothing going on。 If you’ve read it and think I quit too soon， let me know。 My main question remains， does anything ever happen？

I've been reading a lot about Africa lately and though I saw this movie when it first came out， decided to pick up the book。 I enjoyed it for the most part， but I agree with the other comments in that you definitely have to keep in mind the time period about which she writes to understand her relationship with her servants and the squatters on her land。 I learned a lot about the Masai and the Somalians by observing how they lived and reacted to different situations。 I've been reading a lot about Africa lately and though I saw this movie when it first came out， decided to pick up the book。 I enjoyed it for the most part， but I agree with the other comments in that you definitely have to keep in mind the time period about which she writes to understand her relationship with her servants and the squatters on her land。 I learned a lot about the Masai and the Somalians by observing how they lived and reacted to different situations。 。。。more

Karen Blixen is no doubt， a storyteller。 Reading her assessment of people and customs of Africa is initially unsettling and a bit depressing。 She writes as a superior being experiencing the primitive cultures of her workers with lightly concealed disdain but also an odd fascination and undeniable affection after long acquaintance。 Her writing is a reflection of her time and can only be an anachronism in today’s more expansive views。 It is enlightening to read about Africa （Kenya specifically） in Karen Blixen is no doubt， a storyteller。 Reading her assessment of people and customs of Africa is initially unsettling and a bit depressing。 She writes as a superior being experiencing the primitive cultures of her workers with lightly concealed disdain but also an odd fascination and undeniable affection after long acquaintance。 Her writing is a reflection of her time and can only be an anachronism in today’s more expansive views。 It is enlightening to read about Africa （Kenya specifically） in that era of colonial rule where without self-consciousness or awareness the Europeans asserted their rule over a trusting native people before and during the first World War。 She refers to her Kikuyus as squatters on her land which is inverted when we recall that these people have lived in that area for millennia—long before the first European set foot on the soil。 She expresses her realization of this at the end when on losing the farm， she must beg for land so the “her” Kikuyu may stay together。 This was their land—why must they request a white man’s permission to stay？Readers will recognize some of the characters from the famous movie of that name but may be disappointed if they hope to read intimate details of her life—particularly her affair with Denys Finch-Hatton。 Although he is mentioned frequently， it is with a distant friendly tone as would befit a woman of her time。 You do get a clue when she talks about the time of his death in terms of all of nature mourning and the stories of his exploits coming to light。 A loving chapter dedicated to him in a book that does not mention Bror， her husband。 One sees in the end that， she had come to Africa an aristocratic， colonial but leaves Africa forever changed; her mind expanded， more in tune with existence as a whole。 。。。more

Mamma mia la noia。Portare a termine questo libro è stato estenuante， trecento pagine che mi sono sembrate almeno il doppio: non perchè sia scritto male， tutt'altro， anche perché ho già letto altro della Blixen e so perfettamente che sa scrivere; il problema è che manca qualunque tipo di trama o di struttura， il romanzo consiste unicamente di aneddoti pittoreschi e descrizioni naturali che si susseguono confusamente senza una logica。Non saprei neanche se definirle memorie a questo punto， perchè i Mamma mia la noia。Portare a termine questo libro è stato estenuante， trecento pagine che mi sono sembrate almeno il doppio: non perchè sia scritto male， tutt'altro， anche perché ho già letto altro della Blixen e so perfettamente che sa scrivere; il problema è che manca qualunque tipo di trama o di struttura， il romanzo consiste unicamente di aneddoti pittoreschi e descrizioni naturali che si susseguono confusamente senza una logica。Non saprei neanche se definirle memorie a questo punto， perchè i riferimenti alla vera vita dell'autrice sono pochi e si ha la costante sensazione che ometta più di quanto non dica （nessun accenno al divorzio o alla sifilide， mentre Denys Finch-Hatton viene presentato solo come un amico）。L'unico elemento che ha catturato la mia attenzione in questo mare di tedio è stata l'arroganza coloniale di cui è imbevuta la protagonista， tanto più fastidiosa in quanto ammantata di un perbenismo ipocrita。Peccato， mi avevano parlato tutti bene del film e credevo che leggere il libro sarebbe stato anche meglio， ma mi sbagliavo di grosso。Agli appassionati di viaggi， di Africa o della natura in generale sicuramente potrebbe piacere， a tutti gli altri consiglio di tenersi alla larga。 。。。more

I love the movie and so wanted to read the book that inspired it。 A lot is about the natives and very much a product I’d it’s time。 A lot made me very uncomfortable even while keeping that in mind。 There are also many graphic scenes involving hunting and disease and injuries。 Again a product of its time and much more stark than the movie。 There is absolutely no hint of romance with Finch Hatten， in fact she writes about him in a rather detached voice。 All in all， it’s a memorable read but also f I love the movie and so wanted to read the book that inspired it。 A lot is about the natives and very much a product I’d it’s time。 A lot made me very uncomfortable even while keeping that in mind。 There are also many graphic scenes involving hunting and disease and injuries。 Again a product of its time and much more stark than the movie。 There is absolutely no hint of romance with Finch Hatten， in fact she writes about him in a rather detached voice。 All in all， it’s a memorable read but also feels like it could be so much shorter。 I find it hard to believe that West with the Night was not made into a modern movie and this was！ 。。。more

những vũ điệu cổ truyền， họ ngây thơ nhưng không hề khờ khạo và rất ít trong số họ mới có thể đọc chữ。 Khái niệm công bằng cũng rất khác ở châu Phi。 Với dân châu Phi， "chỉ có cách bồi thường là bù đắp được các tai ương trong cuộc sống， họ không tìm kiếm động cơ gây nên tai ương ấy。" Cuộc sống ở đồn điền khiến bà ít có cơ hội gặp gỡ phụ nữ nên nếu được tiếp những vị khách nữ， không khí đồn điền cũng như là vật kết nối với hàng trăm con người。 Bấy nhiêu yêu thương và gắn bó buộc phải để lại Châu Phi và ngay tại nơi này， trên những trang viết về những kí ức tươi đẹp nhưng không ít u hoài。Isak Dinesen đã đem đến cho người đọc một thứ cảm xúc hoang dại nhưng đầy chất thơ và quyến luyến với Châu Phi đại ngàn。 Chúng ta tuy lòng trĩu nặng nhưng lại thấy biết bao yêu thương gắn bó và thân hữu tại đây。 Một người con đến từ nước thực dân nhưng chưa bao giờ có chút khinh mạn và tư tưởng chiếm hữu， chỉ có sự lắng nghe， sự giúp đỡ và sẻ chia。 Điều đó chứng tỏ rằng chẳng có khoảng cách nào giữa Z jednej strony niesamowicie podobały mi się wszelkie opisy flory i fauny afrykańskiej oraz styl pisania Blixen i całkowicie doceniam jej podejście do Afryki - chęć odczarowania jej i pokazania tego „zapomnianego” kontynentu od innej strony niż ówczesna literatura zazwyczaj pokazywała。Z drugiej jednak strony paradoksalnie Blixen wcale nie ucieka od typowego podejścia białego człowieka względem rdzennej ludności afrykańskiej tamtego okresu。 Protekcjonalne odejście do native’ów i traktowanie ich z Z jednej strony niesamowicie podobały mi się wszelkie opisy flory i fauny afrykańskiej oraz styl pisania Blixen i całkowicie doceniam jej podejście do Afryki - chęć odczarowania jej i pokazania tego „zapomnianego” kontynentu od innej strony niż ówczesna literatura zazwyczaj pokazywała。Z drugiej jednak strony paradoksalnie Blixen wcale nie ucieka od typowego podejścia białego człowieka względem rdzennej ludności afrykańskiej tamtego okresu。 Protekcjonalne odejście do native’ów i traktowanie ich z pobłażliwością （jak dzieci， które muszą się jeszcze wiele nauczyć od białego człowieka）， a czasami wręcz porównywanie ich do zwierząt jest dla współczesnego czytelnika po prostu niezjadliwe i całkowicie psuje ostateczny odbiór książki。Tak więc trochę mieszane uczucia - niby było to niezwykle fascynujące doświadczenie i zachęciło mnie do czytania innych powieści o Afryce， ale jednak nie da się przymknąć oka na typowo kolonialne podejście。 Blixen niestety nie jest wyjątkiem swoich czasów。 。。。more

Dinesen， whose real name was Karen Blixen， was a Danish writer who lived in the highlands of Kenya from 1914 to 1931。 Her memoir is a colorful collection of her memories， not necessarily in chronological order， of her experiences， opinions， and acquaintances。 In one section entitled “From an Immigrant’s Notebook，” she includes random short accounts of various experiences without any common theme。 The most compelling part of her story is her relationship with Denys Finch-Hatton， who was an Englis Dinesen， whose real name was Karen Blixen， was a Danish writer who lived in the highlands of Kenya from 1914 to 1931。 Her memoir is a colorful collection of her memories， not necessarily in chronological order， of her experiences， opinions， and acquaintances。 In one section entitled “From an Immigrant’s Notebook，” she includes random short accounts of various experiences without any common theme。 The most compelling part of her story is her relationship with Denys Finch-Hatton， who was an English pilot who led safaris in Africa。 He died in a crash right before Dinesen was due to leave Africa。 She had him buried in the hills overlooking her farm and Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro。 Supposedly the cleared area of his tomb became a location where lions rested to search for game。 She mentions that Nelson’s statue at Trafalgar Square only had stone lions。 Finch-Hatton was apparently a gifted athlete who had graduated from Eton， about which Dinesen knew nothing until after his death。 It is interesting that she had a sort of premonition of his death right before he left for his last flight。 Even more curious was his African co-pilot refused to fly with him on his last flight， and as a result， a different African ended up perishing with him。 Some of the notable aspects of their relationship was his giving Dinesen flights over Kenya as well as their hunting and shooting some lions together。 Finch-Hatton was also well read in classics and used Dinesen’s coffee plantation as a sort of home base to have books and records mailed there。tThroughout her memoir， Dinesen muses on her thoughts and opinions of nature and of people， even describing her dreams and imagined interpretations of her experiences such as giving human characteristics to animals such as her dog having a sense of humor and laughing at her when he barked at a house cat in a tree， which Dinesen had assumed was a wild serval cat。 She also categorizes people by their background associating specific characteristics with people from a particular ethnic group or nationality。 The Somalis， for example， were notable for their willingness to hold grudges and enmities between different clans for generations。 Her top servant was a Somali named Farah。tDinesen arrived in Kenya right before the outbreak of WWI and had actually met the famous German general von Lettow-Vorbeck on a voyage and become friends with him。 Because she had tried to purchase some horses for him prior to the outbreak of the war， she was actually suspected of being a German agent for a while。 However， she redeemed herself by serving the allied cause in leading a supply expedition herself without any Europeans assistance。tHer experiences as the owner of a coffee farm were challenging as her farm was a little too high in elevation to grow substantial crops every year。 When drought and locusts came， her production plummeted。 That coupled with the collapse of coffee prices at the start of the Great Depression forced Dinesen to sell her farm to creditors when she could no longer pay the farm’s bills。tDinesen employed a substantial number of Kikuyu squatters who lived on her land and had to give her a certain number of days of labor per year。 She also had to collect the colonial head tax from them for the authorities。 She described the elaborate dance celebrations known as Ngomas where young men and women performed in both day and night versions。 Dinesen also experienced the African justice system when a young Kikuyu boy accidently shot three other children with a shotgun， killing one of them。 The elders met not to consider the guilt of the boy （as a Western court might） but to determine the proper compensation for the affected families to make up for what they lost in future wealth。 Ultimately， it involved the father of the boy who fired the shotgun giving other families a certain number of goats and cows。tNear the start of her memoir， she described a baby antelope fawn named Lulu whom she saved and raised in her home。 The deer had the literal run of the house， although she eventually left for the wild and returned periodically with a mate to visit the farm。 Lulu had worn a bell that still worked on some of her first few visits back but was eventually lost。tOverall， I found her memoir fascinating and a terrific glimpse of life in British colonial Kenya。 。。。more

We’ve had this book on our shelves for probably 30 years， but it wasn’t until I heard Elisabeth Elliot recommend it that I decided it was time to read it。 This book contains very lyrically told remembrances of the author’s life in Africa running a coffee farm。 She meanders back and forth a bit and in spite of all the different stories， she doesn’t reveal a lot about her personal life。 She had many colorful stories to share， however， of her role on the farm， her role amongst the native Africans w We’ve had this book on our shelves for probably 30 years， but it wasn’t until I heard Elisabeth Elliot recommend it that I decided it was time to read it。 This book contains very lyrically told remembrances of the author’s life in Africa running a coffee farm。 She meanders back and forth a bit and in spite of all the different stories， she doesn’t reveal a lot about her personal life。 She had many colorful stories to share， however， of her role on the farm， her role amongst the native Africans who worked on her farm when issues requiring judgement arose， etc。 She tells of lion hunts， of being part of safaris during the war， of deaths she encountered， of tragedies， of celebrations… Some of the things she writes about would strike our modern sensibilities very uncomfortably， particularly the paternalistic behavior of the Europeans in Africa （Kenya， in her case） toward the native Africans。 However， she clearly loves the land， and loves the people of the land and writes so beautifully about her experiences there。 She hated to leave， but her coffee farm eventually failed to make a profit and she had to sell it and move back to her home in Denmark。 I love the last line of this book as she gets ready to board the train and looks back over the land: “The outline of the mountain was slowly smoothed and leveled out by the hand of distance。” 。。。more

This is an interesting book since it shows a small part of history of Africa。 It is definitely a book of its time。 The author is sympathetic to the Africans around her but she definitely seems to think her culture superior to theirs。 She wants what is best for them and seems at times to understand that the European governments have treated them badly。 However she never seems to realize there could be a better way。

Found the institutionalised racism difficult to stomach。 Felt saddened by the misunderstanding of the culture and the attempts to eradicate customs and rituals。 Just a other tragic story of GB trying to rule the world。 I was also interested that the narrator was female when she was living alone in an isolated homestead and I would have thought would have been frowned upon by her British counterparts。 Interesting read of times gone by。
